How to Control Iron in Water?

Phosphate Method

Phosphate delays the precipitation of oxidised metal, and thus the scaling in the pipeline gets reduced to a great extent. This procedure is referred to as sequestration. Filtration Method

Ion Exchange Method

This is the process typically used in softening water at home. In case the water isn’t in exposure to oxygen, then the resin in the softener removes the iron ions from the sea. This process is not recommended for municipal cleaning.

Oxidation Method

This is the process that enables converting it from a dissolved or soluble ferrous state to a ferric or undissolved state.

  • Oxidation with aeration:

The oxygen in the atmosphere is used to oxidise the iron quickly. Aeration is required to transform the iron from ferrous solution to insoluble iron.

  • Oxidation of iron with air:

It is a cost-efficient method as there is no need expenditure to be incurred on the chemical.

  • Oxidation with chlorine:

Chlorine is another crucial element to oxidise iron and convert it to ferric hydroxide.

  • Oxidation with permanganate:

Using potassium permanganate to oxidise iron is another common practice to oxidise iron in its insoluble state.
